Physical Description: Augustus Rookwood is 5'10," with a very slender, lanky build of muscles that are nicely defined, but by no means bulky. His skin is olive toned, but fair, with hair so dark brown it is almost black and eyes of a similar shade. His hair, which is always a little too long in the back, falls above his eyebrows, which are dark and thick, but well-groomed. With his dark eyes, thick eyelashes, and soft features, Augustus is really the most positive possible outcome of years of pureblood inbreeding. (Shockingly enough, he looks a good deal like Josesph Gordon-Levitt.) Knowing that he couldn't really be ugly if he tried, he doesn't put a lot of effort into his appearance, wearing a lot of t-shirts and jeans when he's out of uniform, though he's virtually always clean-shaven. He doesn't like the feel of stubble.

Personality & History: Augustus Kenneth Rookwood was born in Sheepscombe, Gloucestershire, England on February 17, 1959 to Octavius and Atia Rookwood. He's an only child, which doesn't surprise anyone who knows him. Born into a wealthy-enough pureblood family, Rookwood was taught by both of his parents from an early age that pureblooded witches and wizards were special, and that muggles were an evolutionary accident. Muggleborns, they believed, were of little more consideration. These views were never really drilled into his head as they might have been in many pureblood homes, but nor did Augustus ever really questioned his parents' beliefs, accepting, as he had always assumed anyway, that he was simply born better than most people.

When Augustus was six years old, his father died suddenly of an illness contracted during a somewhat sketchy business trip to Panama. Because of this, Augutustus was raised primarily by his mother, but also by a number of uncles, aunts and grandparents who were all very concerned with the growth and development of Octavius' only child. His mother also did a lot of dating during his youth, which introduced a lot of people into his life who left it shortly after. This experience taught him not to get attached to anyone too quickly: it doesn't lead anywhere good. One of his mother's boyfriends was also the first person to ever call Rookwood a "Smart Arse," and he feels that he's lived up to his title.

In his childhood, he demonstrated a great deal of athletic ability, often spending time outside with other local wizarding children throwing around a quaffle and training up to have a go at the quidditch team when he was at school and old enough to go out for it. In those "important developmental years," as his mother called them, Augustus had several private tutors who taught him magical technique and the French Language. They also ended up making him read a lot of books. Though Augustus originally fought this tooth and nail, he developed a fondness for research and learning, especially researching things that were difficult to understand or explain. Some of it, he realizes, was probably his fondness for being better than others by knowing more than they do.

On his eleventh birthday, his Hogwarts letter arrived, coming as no real surprise to his family, but as a point of pride nonetheless. Anything that made their children better than someone else's was worth noting to the Rookwood family. Once at school, he was sorted almost effortlessly into Slytherin: his ambition and his pure blood sealed the deal. While the Rookwoods were never one of the most prominent families, their name carried just enough weight that Rookwood has had very little trouble making important friends. He's also more manipulative than most realize, and has little trouble keeping them. Not, of course, that all of his contacts are Slytherins. The Bagmans are also close family friends. Rookwood just choses not to spend time with individuals whom, he believes, would somehow hinder him in his quest to make something of himself. Preferably something that involves a lot of thought, and not a lot of repetative paperwork.

Rookwood still enjoys quidditch, fancying himself a pretty damn good chaser, and more typically Slytherin activities, like making Gryffindors and mudbloods miserable when possible. He's very sarcastic, finding few things more satisfying than winning an argument with one last snappy remark that shuts down whomever you're arguing with. Arguing is almost like a game for him, really. It's just all about who wins. However, Augustus really is not one of those people who talks because they like the sound of their own voice. He's often quiet in crowds, especially when surrounded by people he's not familiar with, preferring to talk to people he already knows, or else people he realizes he ought to get to know a little better. He's not afraid of social situations, he just doesn't enjoy pointless, mindless chatter or making nice to people about whom he doesn't give a damn. Besides, his mouth is usually too occupied with his current oral fixation: smoking.

Since Augustus is pretty selfish, there are few people for whom he actually cares. Few, but not none. Because of this, he doesn't have a close group of friends. He doesn't like most girls, really never has, and certainly has no real interest in dating them. No, Augustus is decidedly, well, gay. He has sort of suspected it since he was nine years old, though at the time he wouldn't have known what to call it. He accepts this as fact, and though he doesn't really talk about it, he also wouldn't deny it if questioned. Unless, perhaps, it was by his family, who is still unaware of his orientation. At 17 years old, he has never had a serious relationship, though he has had his fair share of casual ones that never came to anything.

When he graduates from Hogwarts, he has always had dreams of becoming an unspeakable. Because of this desire, and how hard he realizes that it will be to attain, he has always worked hard in school, achieving high marks and making a good impression on the teachers that were easier to suck up to. Slughorn, especially, has a fondness for him, compounded by his superior skill in Potions. This contact, he realizes, will serve him well. He doesn't like school, not really, but nor does he hate it. It's more of a stepping stone to something else, which, as far as he's concerned, can't come a moment too soon. He would really like to move out of his family home.
